Cambodia officially the Kingdom of Cambodia is a country in Southeast Asia, or Indochina. Within a few decades, the Buddhist country experienced one of the greatest massacres in human history known as the Khmer Rouge.

In 1993 Cambodia became a monarchy again and took state control after having been in the hands of the Khmer Rouge and Vietnam.

With an estimated population of 17,300,000 (according to https://www.indexmundi.com/cambodia) today the country has moderately grown in its economy but is still one of the poorest countries in Asia.

Cambodian culture reflects the influence of Theravada Buddhism and French culture, as the French colonized Cambodia for over 80 years. The anti-intellectual Khmer Regime decimated several cultural influencers and killed the vast majority of intellectuals. The regime also left marks that directly influenced the country’s economy, with 50% of the population under 22 years of age.

The temple of Angkor Wat is in Cambodia. It is the largest temple in the world and was once Hindu but is now a Buddhist temple.

The new year in Cambodia starts on April 13th or 14th, depending on their understanding of the sun’s movement, and is divided into 12 months. The official language of Cambodia is Khmer and in some parts of the country there are still some people who speak dialects similar to official Khmer, but which are ancestors of the current language.

The capital of Cambodia is Phnom Penh lies on the banks of the Mekong River and is the most populous city in Cambodia with approximately 2,200,000 inhabitants.

Recent statistics indicate that the workforce in Cambodia is agriculture: 48.7%, Industry: 19.9%, services: 31.5% (2013 est.). The average annual income is USD 1,614.00 per capita (according to the International Monetary Fund). In addition to being the most populous city, Phnom Penh is also home to Cambodia’s financial, economic, and political centers.

A MILLENNIAL CULTURE

Cambodia is also a country of natural beauty. Bathed by the Indian Ocean, the country has beautiful beaches with crystal clear water and pleasant temperatures. The country has beautiful architecture, luxury hotels, casinos, and exotic cuisine. Tourism has been responsible for boosting the country’s economy, which has grown slowly but is still among the ten poorest in Asia.

Cambodia is a charming country; it has a well-preserved culture with typical dances and ancient customs. It is washed by the Mekong River, one of the largest rivers in the world with the second greatest biodiversity, second only to the Amazon basin. The country depends on fishing and agriculture, being one of the largest rice producers in the world.

Around 75% of the population live in rural areas, with little or no infrastructure, such as running water and electricity. Cambodia has a very low rate of violence such as theft and murder, but has high rates of domestic violence, child abuse and human trafficking.
