The Power of Dignity

In our work of restoring rescued kids we found that, more than just shelter, food and legal aid, these girls needed love, attention and a kind word.

AoGE Founder Silvio Silva has written a book, sharing his and Rose’s story of moving to Nepal in 2000 (not speaking a word of English or Nepali!) to serve girls rescued from sexual exploitation. The book focuses on solutions that restore dignity to survivors, and features poignant and inspiring stories of Nepali girls raised at AoGE, including the ‘First Generation’ leaders – once beneficiaries and now leading the project.

The Power of Dignity

Over 24 years, through the privilege of working with hundreds of children rescued from sex trafficking, I have learned a lot about dignity: the circumstances that damage it and the elements needed to recover it. Dignity is absolutely critical for a person’s wellbeing.

In our work of restoring rescued kids we found that, more than just shelter, food and legal aid, these girls needed love, attention and a kind word. They needed to have their stories heard. They needed to share their losses, their frustrations and their growing dreams for the future.

When girls first came to us they were in a state of extreme distress, with a deep sense of unworthiness. They would say, “I’m worthless, I’m the garbage of the garbage.” But when we showed them the truth of their human worth, they were ready to embrace the healing. Today, they are not just standing on their own feet, they are also able to help others. It is the greatest gift of my life to see many girls and boys enjoying this high level of dignity.
